Mastery Chain (also called Gem Mastery) is a long-term PvE progression system built around a single piece of jewelry: the Gem Mastery Necklace. Carry it, fight monsters, and you’ll slowly unlock slots for Mastery Gems – permanent, stacking bonuses that make your character better at combat, spellcasting, gathering, and more.
There’s no skill requirement to use it. Everyone starts at the same place, and progress comes from just playing the game.
Mastery Chain bonuses are PvE only. They switch off while you are in PvP combat, so this system won’t affect open-world player combat.
- It’s permanent. Once you level up and socket a gem, that bonus stays on your necklace until you remove it (it applies while you wear or carry your active necklace).
- It’s account-wide. Every character on your account shares the same Mastery level and experience, so no character is left behind.
- It rewards normal play. You earn progress simply by killing monsters – no special dailies, no separate grind.
- It’s flexible. There are dozens of bonus types across combat, spellcasting, gathering, barding, and more, so you can build toward whatever playstyle you enjoy.
- Craft a Gem Mastery Necklace using Tinkering (100 skill required).
- Fight monsters. You’ll earn Mastery experience automatically.
- Level up to unlock gem slots – there are 30 in total, one per level.
- Find or earn Mastery Gems from monsters (harder monsters drop better gems).
- Socket gems into your necklace for gold and Shard Essence to gain their bonuses.
- Activate your necklace from its right-click menu (and keep it worn or in your backpack) so its bonuses actually apply.
That’s it – no separate currency to farm, no special zone to visit. Just play, and your chain grows.
