To tame a creature to accept you as master requires patience, nerve, and willpower. The rewards of studying Animal Taming are considered by many to be well worth the investment of time. Tamers are considered one of the most useful and versatile classes in fighting monsters.
A player's skill in Animal Taming (along with their skill level in Animal Lore) will determine the chances of taming a given creature and controlling it. In addition, a high Animal Lore skill will reduce the minimum skill required to tame.
In order to tame a creature or beast, you must (a) have the proper skill level required in order to tame the beast/creature and (b) must be standing near the target.
Although the majority of creatures and animals throughout the world are non-hostile and can be tamed at will, more dangerous creatures are more difficult to tame. There is a higher chance that the player will fail at their attempt to tame the beast or monster and enrage the beast. Paralyzing and Peacemaking hostile creatures makes your life infinitely easier as a tamer. If you notice that you constantly enrage a creature, try lowering it's HP… the lower the HP, the less chance there is of enraging it. Alternatively, spam the taming skill until it gives you the chance to make a taming attempt.
Veterinary and Animal Lore are essential skills that every tamer should train. Herding is an optional tamer skill that provides some additional benefits.
Each time you gain a skill point by using the taming skill, you are also awarded 5 passive taming points. Passive taming points are consumed when you use your pets in combat. When a passive point is consumed, you will gain a point in animal taming.
To gain a point through the passive taming system, a pet needs to fight a creature of a higher difficulty. For example, using a horse to kill a troll. However, only one pet needs to be lower difficulty than your target. Therefore, it's beneficial to have one or two strong pets who actually do damage, and a weak pet (horse) that gives the passive gain chance.
You can check your passive point balance in your skill book under the Animal Taming skill.
Warning: If you are exhausted from animal taming, passive taming points can still be consumed, but you will not gain animal taming skill. (type /exhausted)
Each town has a stable. All stables share their inventory of stabled animals. This means that you can stable a pet in Cove and claim the pet in Britain. There will be one or more NPCs at the stable that can offer various services:
At 100 Animal Taming, you will get 2 extra stable slots.
Pets with owners in a PvP timer will have the following effects on their pet
In Britannia all of our monsters are nearly identical in stats and behavior to that of their UO counterparts.

If you just want the best gains while taming you will need to lock your Animal Lore to the level of the tameable first, this means that you will be able to get a lot more gains per animal than normal, you can do this as long as your taming is within 5 points of the targets level and your Animal Lore is the targets level. This should work until the 70-75 range when it drops and you need to be 3-4 from its level in taming, it does mean you will be able to try taming drakes at around 81.3 Taming (you will fail massively and not get much in the way of gains here but you will also eventually get a pet to bond) you should also stop locking AL and feel free to max it for best Vet results.
Examples:
Bears - 65.1 Animal Lore, start taming at 60.1 Animal Taming
Kitsunes - 80.7 Animal Lore, start taming around 76.7 Animal Taming (can be controlled at 76.5)
Drakes - 84.3 Animal Lore, start taming around 81.3 Animal Taming
This is a taming guide that is subject to change. This is based off of the current build/state of the server. I hope this helps some of you new tamers getting into LoU taming scene. -Vivid86
It is highly recommended to start off with 50 taming while creating your character!
Personally I added 50 Magery to go with this build for utility and the ability to use Magery to take down mobs and heal myself as necessary.
The first thing you will want to do if you have not started with any taming or lore skill at all is to approach and stable master. You can single left click them and pay gold to train in Animal Taming and Animal Lore. This will get you immediately to 40 skill in each. Once you have done this you are set to begin your long journey to Grandmaster Tamer.
Taming Skill | Animals To Tame | Tips/Locations |
---|---|---|
30-43 | Hinds, Boars, Turkeys | Wilderness areas, North of Britian graveyard, SE of Britian Moongate. Wilderness areas in general hold these spawns. |
43-54.8 | Alligators | The swamp location East of Covetous is the only known spawn at this time with Alligators. Tame alligators and farm the lizard men to farm some gold while you gain taming skill. |
54.8-66.5 | Scorpions, Giant Spiders, Brown & Black bears | There is a plentiful amount of Scorpions in Shame level 1 & 2, as well as a small spawn in the desert around the Compassion shrine. Giant Spiders are located in Covetous Level 3, as well as wilderness areas South of Yew. Brown and Black bears are located all over in the Wilderness areas. |
66.5-67.5 | Brown & Black Bears, Bulls | This is a short stint for bulls I have found, you can still gain skill from the Alligators and up however my tactic has been to tame the hardest mob possible for the maximum amount of fails. |
67.5-80 | Brown and Black Bears, Bulls, and Great Harts | Bulls are located throughout the wilderness areas often few and far between. South of Ice dungeon there is a plentiful spawn of animals, it is said that if you clear the unwanted Hinds from this area you can get a nice spawn of Great Harts to tame. Do note continue to tame Brown and Black bears. Repetition is key! |
80-95 | Great Harts, Direwolves, Drakes | Continue with the same location South of Ice dungeon for Great Harts. There are few Direwolf spawns, I have seen some spawn at the Ice dungeon surrounding areas. Also there has been sightings outside of the Shame dungeon by the small pool. Keep your eyes out for these allusive beasts! Drakes are located in the Destard dungeon, using paralyze to subdue the beast while you attempt to tame along with high peacemaking is almost required. This can be a very dangerous tame solo. |
96-100 | Drakes, Dread Spiders, Dragons* and White Wyrms* | Drakes and Dragons can be found in Destard dungeon level 1, 2. Dread spiders can be found in Covetous Lvl 2 & 3 + North of Minoc and White Wyrms can be found in Ice Dungeon Level 1. |
* Dragons and White Wyrms can be tamed starting from 98.1 Taming, However, your Animal Lore needs to be 100.0
Taming Guide by Epinefedrina
Starting Skills:
50 Animal Taming
50 Peace Making
Before heading out taming focus on leveling melee fighting skills focusing on fencing.
Ideally you should reach
80 Healing -minimum 60 to be able to heal poisons
80 Anatomy -minimum 60 to be able to heal poison, 80 for special hit
80 Fencing -for paralyzing blow amongst and to be able have a chance of dodging incoming hits
Parry can be trained too and dropped later, not essential as we will want our pets to tank the damage rather than us.
Tactics is not essential as we mostly want the melee skill for the passive ability to dodge incoming hits and to hit a paralyzing blow every now and then but is handy to deal more damage and kill threats and useless stuff faster.
70+ Animal Lore
30 Mag (can be bought from the vendor)
50 Music (not essential to macro it as we will be using it quite often)
Once we got those skills we can head into the swamp.
Focus on taming Alligators while using Peace to keep the Lizardman quiet. Because of your melee skills the alligators shouldn't be hitting too hard and you should be able to heal poisons and damage.
Once you get to 54.1 we can swap to Snakes until 55.2.
Snakes have a low chance to poison but they deal little damage and once again, because of the melee skill they will miss most of the hits.
From 55.2 to 68.1 you should focus on Bears. Tame 3 and keep them for self defense and from there tame a bear, make the other 3 bears kill it and keep taming. It's not a good idea to release them as the leash on released pets its very long. Between Peace Making and the melee skill hitting the occasional paralyzing blow you should be alright to sustain damage from Bears, Ettins, Trolls (always take them one at a time).
Once you get to 68.2 you can start working on Great Harts. Still try and tame bears, every little counts, but your attention should focus on Great Harts.
Also at this stage it would be a good idea to start training a little bit of Veterinary.
At 80.6 if you have 84.3 Animal Lore you should be able to control 2 drakes. Get a friend to tame you two drakes so you can start bonding them.
Once the drakes are bonded I suggest to start taming on foot using the two drakes to kill everything on our path. We can stay behind the drakes using peace making or also attack with the melee skill but two bonded drakes should be able to handle almost any threat lurking in the taming areas.
When approaching 90 Animal Taming I suggest to heavily focus on getting to GM Animal Lore so we can move to Dread Spiders as soon as possible (93.5 I think).
Dread Spiders are a game changer in taming. Once you can start working with them you can safely say that the worst is over.
Dread Spiders can be found in the caves in North Minoc, they take 3 slots so here you would have to go with just one drake to tank the damage.
Walk slowly into the cave, try to get one spider to aggro you, take it out of the cave and while it focuses on your drake you stay behind taming it, using peace making and healing your drake. Beware that a poisoned drake will try to kill the spider that poisoned it until its cured so focus on curing poison as soon as possible as once you get to calm the spider tell your drake to stand down. Once you tame a spider rename it and send it to kill the other spiders. Stay in range to watch it die and repeat. Spider die very quickly.
From here on out you should be hitting the daily cap almost every day until 98.1 where you can chose to stay and get to 100 or finally call it a day and go get some Dragons and Whyte Wyvrn.
Good places for Bears/Great Harts are near Ice Dungeon and North Minoc.
Animal Lore Tips
As a general tip I would suggest to raise Animal Lore quite high to start with to be able to leave the Swamp behind rather fast, and once you reach Great Harts lower your Animal Lore to just the minimum you need for Great Harts. And when you are in reach of 80 skill bring it up to 84.3 to be able to control two drakes. Stay in 84.3 for a while but try to be GM by the time you get to 93 taming so you can move to Dread Spiders. And then every time you get a few decimals of animal taming lower animal lore so spiders are still challenging.
Animal lore can be macroed but because of all the skill we are using it should raise quite fast as they all use it (Animal Taming, Veterinary)
