[Updated by Coca Cola - Grandmaster Fisherman - 1st January 2023]
Oceans surround Britannia on all sides, and winding rivers cut through the land. Those adept in Fishing will have an endless supply of fish, and have also been known to hook treasure and danger alike.
In order to fish, a player must simply have a Fishing Pole equipped, double-click the item, and then select the waters in which they would like to fish. Note that exceptional crafted fishing poles can be crafted or purchased from other players. These exceptional fishing poles are more durable and will allow longer periods of use before they eventually wear out and break.
Fishing skill affects the success rate of gathering and also determines which objects the fisherman can obtain.
Once all of the fish in a location have been gathered, a system message will appear stating "The fish do not seem to be biting here." At this point, this fisherman will want to move further along the coastline in order to find another location to fish.
Various items besides fish may be fished up during fishing. Messages in a bottle may be found, which will lead one to treasure hidden in the water throughout the world. Additional items that can be fished up include fishing nets, reagents, kindling, and bandages, among other items and tattered maps which might lead one to find special mounts.
Note: Minimum fishing skill requirement is not working. All fish can be caught at all skill levels.
Type of Fish | Min Skill Required* | Notes |
Barrel Fish | 5* | Can be caught while in town limits |
Tero Fish | 25* | When cut and cooked provides measly amount of stamina regeneration |
Spotted Tero Fish | 45* | When cut and cooked provides small amount of stamina regeneration |
Four Eyed Salar | 65* | When cut and cooked provides moderate amount of stamina regeneration |
Razor Fish | 85* | When cut and cooked provides large amount of stamina regeneration |
Golden Aether Fish | 95* | When cut and cooked provides massive amount of stamina regeneration |
Rare Fish Types | Min Skill Required* | Notes |
Highly Peculiar Fish | Used to regenerate stamina quickly (although nowhere near as effective as Golden Auther Fish) - does not need to be cooked however
Prized Fish | Used to receive a temporary boost to intelligence (in the order of 5 points)
Wondrous Fish | Used to receive a temporary boost to dexterity (in the order of 5 points)
Truly Rare Fish | Used to receive a temporary boost to strength (in the order of 5 points)
Icefish | Can only be fished up using an ice fishing pick. They produce “raw fish fillets” when cut that have no special boost bonuses |
*Note that fish of all types can be caught with minimum skill, however, the frequency of catch of higher level fish is determined by fishing skill level.
Fish can be caught in the following sizes with larger fish being more rare.
The size of the fish you catch is based on the luck of the catch - higher skill has no effect.
Regular |
Large |
Huge |
Gigantic |
Legendary |
Colossal |
NPC Fisherman have a leaderboard option that you can submit your catch to and see how your caught fish weigh up against other players. Simply seek out a NPC fishermen at most docks in Britannia and choose this option from the interaction list. You will need to have your fish in your backpack to use this function.
- increased chance to receive general loot & MIBs in dungeons
- added special loot only available from fishing in dungeons (must be level 90 Fishing or higher)
- fishing in a dungeon may disturb monsters in the water now
MiBs can be fished up using a regular fishing pole, or can appear in loot from mobs when fished up using a net. When an MiB is double clicked, it is converted into a SoS item. This SoS produces a map pointing to the location of a sunken ship/sunken treasure chest. Fishing skill and a fishing net are required to be able to use and fish up sunken treasure. The level of difficulty of the SoS determines the skill required in Fishing to be able to find and fish up the treasure.
The levels of SoS maps are:
Loot from sunken treasure chests includes gold pieces, fish, magic scrolls, reagents, gems, clothing, barrels, buckets, pillows, bandages, plates, cutlery, and less frequently, fishing nets, MiBs and paintings. Similar items can be looted from the mobs that you fish up with your nets while trying to recover the sunken chests from SoS maps.
This is the standard way to fish for tasty morsels or other items.
You can obtain fishing rods from NPC fisher-people, other player vendors or they can be crafted with the Carpentry skill. Exceptional grade fishing rods will last longer than standard grade fishing rods, but they are a consumable item which will need to be replaced often,
Golden Fishing Rods can be fished up from the seas or moat around Britain bank, and are a rare item. These rods have 5x the durability of standard rods and you can fish faster using them (5% faster).
Rares and other less useful items can be fished up in the moat next to Britain West Bank. You can expect to catch a lot of barrel fish, and useless tattered pieces of clothing (all not worth anything really), but very occasionally you might fish up a rare item. These can vary from potted plants to decorative vines, to golden fishing rods, to any other manner of hard to find special items, and the moat rare loot table is changes frequently.
On average, you might expect to find one rare item every 8-10 hours of continuous fishing time, but sometimes you can get lucky and score 2 items in an hour, but more frequently you could go 24 hours or more of fishing time without finding a single rare item. If you have endless patience, this might be the sport for you.
Using a boat, you can now fish up all types of piscatorial pleasures and even some rare items from the Deep Seas of Britannia. You can fish up all the available types of fish, including the rare fish types, plus a chance of fishing up rare items which include fishing nets, fabled fishing nets, messages in bottles, special item deeds, and the less special things like tattered clothing, kindling, moss and reagents.
Deep Sea fishing brings with it the chance of fishing up a mob or sea critter that wants to end your life. Fishing up these creatures is fairly common so be ready to fight or flee when they pop up from the deep sea depths.
Fishing nets can be purchased from NPC Fishermen from any docks in towns of Britannia. They cost 1000gp each and require a minimum fishing skill of 65 in order to use.
The nets can be used in any ocean body of water. They cannot be used inside dungeons or in some smaller ponds or lakes around Britannia. When fishing with nets, there is a high chance you will fish up mobs which can include:
- Elementals (Air, Water, Poison)
- Crabs (Small, Giant, King)
- Snakes (Small, Sea Serpents)
- Lizards
- Other monsters
The chance to find MiBs appears to be increased with using fishing nets over a normal fishing pole, but one must weigh up this increased chance with the cost of the net to purchase. It is easy to burn through 5 or more nets in a matter of 15 minutes or less in some cases, so it can be a costly exercise and may not be worth the effort.
Bait can now be purchased from NPC Fishermen for a small fee, or you can get bait drops from crabs that are fished up in dungeons, or with nets. The new bait items are:
Earth Worms and Minnows are applied to the hook of your fishing rod and grant a greater chance of fishing something up, although the increased chance percentage is unknown.
Fishing Chum is thrown into the water and has the chance of attracting a school of fish. When a school is attracted, fishing in this same spot will usually result in catching the same type of fish until the chum runs out. Currently the only fish you can attract in schools using fishing chum are Tero, Spotted Tero, Four-Eyed Salar, and Razor Fish. It is unknown if fishing chum can attract a school of prized Golden Aether fish as yet!
Fishing Chum may also be obtained from cutting up special fish caught using a fishing rod - Truly Rare Fish, Prized Fish, Wondrous Fish etc - You get 1-3 Fishing Chum by slicing up one of these rare special fish.
Ice picks can be purchased from NPC Fishermen for 7,500gp each and require a minimum fishing skill of 80 to use.
They are used on ice areas on Dagger Isle (surrounding the town of Windemere). Each pick has 25 charges, which means you can use the pick to carve out 25 holes in ice, and each ice fishing spot can be fished until the fish stop biting. Once a hole is dug, a nice ice fishing tent / camp spawns but this only adds to the ambience and provides no protection against surrounding creatures in the area.
- There is an increased chance of fishing general loot, MiBs (messages in bottles) and other items when ice fishing.
- There is a chance you will fish up mobs when ice fishing, although generally it is a single monster or animal (seal cub, walrus and ice crabs are most common).
- Icefish can also be caught, and only when ice fishing.
- Fish that are caught can be turned into fish fillets (by use of a dagger, or sword weapon) and then cooked and used as a stamina regenerating food source. The more rare the fish, the more stamina regen it offers. I.e. Golden Aether Fish when cooked using the Cooking skill will provide a massive amount of stamina regeneration. Razor fish provide slightly less, and Barrel fish provide none at all. Consuming cooked golden aether fish fillets are great for pure dexxer characters wearing heavy plate armour suits in battles against multiple foes!
Train Fishing to 40 from NPC Fisherman. They are typically found roaming the town docks.
Fishing can be raised through use up to 70 while in the protection of the town guards. After that, you'll have to venture into the wild.
