When confronted with a locked chest, the Lockpicking skill is one you are sure to need. By using lockpicks, an individual can attempt to pick the lock of any container. Depending on the complexity of the lock as well as the individuals Lockpicking skill, attempting to unlock the lock will either (a) successfully open the lock or (b) break the lockpick. A good rogue is always well-prepared with plenty of lockpicks!
Lockpicks can be purchased from Tinker NPCs or crafted with the Tinkering skill.
Additionally, Skeleton Keys can be used to open a lock of any level once before breaking. Skeleton keys have a 24-hour expiry once you find them.
Listed below are the skill levels required to open the various types of chests found in dungeons and overland camps.
Chest Type | Min. Lockpicking Required |
---|---|
Plainly locked | 0 |
Expertly locked | 30.0 |
Adeptly locked | 50.0 |
Cleverly locked | 70.0 |
Deviously locked | 94.0 |
0-40 - Buy the skill from NPC Tinker or Thief Guildmaster NPC
30-50 - Expertly locked box/lockset made by player Tinkers*
50-70 - Adeptly locked box/lockset made by player Tinkers*
70-94 - Cleverly locked box/lockset made by player Tinkers* (Can train up to 95 on player made Cleverly Locked boxes)
94-100 - Deviously locked chests in dungeons, treasure maps, or overland Orc spawns, and the door to chests at Ice Fiends (which is Deviously Locked).
*Note that if using player crafted lockboxes, the lock mechanism will wear out and break fairly early on. You should be able to level up to the next lockpicking level using just 1-2 lock repair kits.
