Mastery Gems come in four materials. The material determines how strong the gem’s bonus is – every material can roll any bonus type, so a Ruby and an Obsidian gem might grant the exact same kind of bonus, just at very different strengths.
| Material | Power | Typical source |
|---|---|---|
| Ruby | Standard (1.00x) | Most monsters (small chance) |
| Sapphire | Enhanced (1.20x) | Tougher monsters (small chance) |
| Topaz | Superior (1.40x) | Mini-bosses |
| Obsidian | Corrupted (1.75x) | Raid bosses only |
For example, a gem with the Melee Ignore Armor Chance bonus gives:

Installing a gem into an unlocked slot costs gold (scaled by the gem’s material) plus a flat amount of Shard Essence per gem:
| Gem Material | Gold Cost | Shard Essence |
|---|---|---|
| Ruby | 30,000 gp | 50 |
| Sapphire | 60,000 gp | 50 |
| Topaz | 90,000 gp | 50 |
| Obsidian | 150,000 gp | 50 |
To install a gem:
Gems always go into your lowest empty unlocked slot. You need enough gold and Shard Essence on hand, and an open slot, or the installation is refused.
There’s also an Install All button, which finds every eligible gem in your backpack and installs them all in one confirmation, showing you the total gold and Shard Essence cost up front.
There is no skill requirement to install any gem. Any unlocked slot can hold any gem regardless of your character’s skills or stats – you only need the Mastery level that unlocked the slot, plus the cost.
Click the socketed gem’s slot in the Gem Mastery window and confirm. The gem is recreated and returned to your backpack, with the exact same material and bonus type it had when you socketed it. There is no cost to remove a gem.
Loose Mastery Gems stack in your backpack as long as they share the same material and the same bonus type – a stack of Ruby gems that all rolled Melee Damage will stack together, but a Ruby with Melee Damage and a Ruby with Spell Damage will not.
